It's time for Plywood, where we look at construction sites so you don't have to. Seen or heard something we've missed? The tipline is always open.
Hometown superstar and former Vanity Fair art director, Saucebox chef, and Zefiro co-owner Chris Israel's long-awaited Alpine restaurant Gruner, recently Plywooded, has a close-to-confirmed opening date of January 1. So, what can those lining up outside the west downtown Skylab building starting the first day of 2010 expect? "It's a bigger picture than what Americans do for German or Austrian food," Israel told us. "It's about broadening and expanding the vocabulary of what that kind of cooking is." Sounds like it'll be the Alps by way of central Oregon -- "Oregon grows a lot of varietals that should get a little more attention than they do," he also said. "This is a good way of exposing that."
