Writer, foodie and Ristretto roaster Nancy Rommelmann went to New York recently, and instead of bringing back a bag of boring NYC tees, she went one better. She bought and brought a pound of sable home on the plane. Why? "(Ristretto owner Din Johnson and I) can’t find this tender, buttery, not-at-all fishy smoked fish here in Portland," says Rommelmann. "Which is weird, because sable is black cod, which is fished off the Oregon Coast. We figured we’d try to make it, with a little (okay, a lot) of help." According to the experts sable fish are favored for their texture, taste, and clean white flesh. This Saturday and Sunday sable lovers can nosh on the hard-to-get good stuff (smoked by Rodney Muirhead of Podnah’s BBQ) with a bagel and cream cheese, all just for $6 at Ristretto's North Williams location. Sure beats airfare on JetBlue.
