Last night the IACP handed Lisa Schroeder, the force of nature behind Mother's Bistro & Bar and Mama Mia Trattoria, the award for Chef/Restaurateur of the Year. Though Schroeder is a Portlander, and the IACP conference is in Portland this week, competition for the award is national. The category is a new one this year for the segment of IACP awards labeled Awards of Excellence, which are open to IACP members only. Schroeder has been a media magnet since she first opened Mother's in 2000, first winning Willamette Week's Restaurant of the Year and after that about a zillion other local and national awards and "best of"s and praise for her cookbook, Mother's Best. AND she gets to hobnob with famous editor Judith Jones (right in photo, Lisa in center.)
