When Sydney’s Café, on the far west edge of the Pearl, lost its lease last winter, staff handed out notices explaining that the coming closure wasn’t their fault and that they would reopen someplace nearby soon. EaterPDX revealed it was slightly more complicated than that. Nevertheless, Sydney’s devoted regulars were about as psyched as Sarah Palin at a NARAL conference. This may explain relative lack of buzz for Sydney’s replacement, Breken Kitchen, which opened in late January (7 am to 5 pm Monday-Friday, 8 am to 3 pm Saturday). It's surprising because BK is a near-perfect doppelganger of Sydney’s. Still hangout friendly with dozens of open outlets for powering up, the only obvious changes are reining in the kiddie play area (brilliant move) and offering a more elaborate menu than Sydney’s had of housemade baked goods, salads and sandwiches. Beer and wine promised soon. And its website is working just fine.
