In the "where-are-they-cooking-now" department: Former Saucebox executive chef Gregory Gourdet (right) is now the executive chef at Departure, the high-flying Asian eatery located on the tippy-top of the Nines Hotel. The "bad ass culinarian" — as dubbed by Sage Restaurant Group's own Peter Karpinski — was spotted on Sauvie Island over the weekend competing in a half-marathon with Cafe Nell's Chef Andrew Garrett. And to kick off his tenure, Gourdet has created a new tasting menu "inspired by the gifts of the ocean" for "Ocean Day." The Japanese holiday menu will only be available at Departure July 16 and 17.
And another chef from the Bruce Carey restaurant empire, former Bluehour chef du cuisine Drew Lockett, has tentatively signed on to help out at the Viewpoint Inn, a gorgeous, albeit perpetually struggling, Columbia Gorge brunch hot-spot that was featured in the very first Twilight film.
