Courier Coffee Roasters Opens in Former Half & Half Spot

The space that tearfully said goodbye to downtown institution Half & Half has welcomed a new tenant — surprise! — in the form of another coffee shop. Courier Coffee Roasters, the Hawthorne-based roaster famous for making its deliveries (to places like Navarre and Dove Vivi) by bike, made its brick-and-mortar debut this Monday. According to owner Joel Domreis, the spot's casual vibe is to "serve coffee like you would beer — [we're] trying to treat this like a bar," which means no cash register transactions, bar-style seating, and copies of photographs by Basquiat on the walls. Currently, Courier's serving up pastries (made in-house) and affogato (espresso poured over ice cream) Monday-Friday beginning at 7am (closing hours are experimental, but run between 3-5pm).
