Benson Hotel's London Grill Transitioning to Event Space

An Old School Portland landmark is calling it quits: The more-than-60-year-old London Grill, inside downtown's Benson Hotel, has announced plans to completely cease food service by the end of 2011, transforming into a private dining and special event space after the new year. According to a press release, lunch service has already shifted to the hotel's more casual Palm Court restaurant, while dinner service and the recurring Sunday Champagne brunch series will continue until the end of the year.

The London Grill opened in 1955 following a previous incarnation as the Oak Room; it was one of the few spots in town that embraced the old-school traditions of tableside Caesars and bananas foster. According to the release, the shuttering of the London Grill does not affect operations at El Gaucho, the Benson's other fine-dining spot.
