According to signage in the window announcing the loss of its lease, NW 23rd's Rose's Deli & Bakery quietly shuttered over the weekend after more than 55 years in business. Yesterday (Sunday) was Rose's final day of service.

The New York-style deli, famously founded by Rose Naftalin way back in 1956, expanded over the years to include restaurants in Irvington, West Linn, Sherwood, Vancouver, and even the Portland Airport, though it seems to have fallen victim to the economic downtown of late — within the last year, the outposts in Irvington and West Linn have also called it quits. The closure of the 23rd restaurant certainly marks the end of an era; no word yet on plans for Rose's other outposts.
