Oregon is home to a lot of restaurants, bars, wineries, and breweries, and though certain spots generate all the buzz, there are tons of hidden gems that the majority of Portlanders — ourselves included — just aren't unearthing. To help guide us to these potential discoveries, we've enlisted some of our city's many food luminaries to share their under-the-radar recommendations for a weekly feature dubbed Dining Confidential.
Irving Street Kitchen chef Sarah Schafer knows a thing or two about seasonal fare at her meat-loving, southern-leaning Pearl District haute spot. But what you might not know is that the Boston native travelled the world before moving to Portland last May to open ISK. Since then, she's been craving a meal that would transport her back to the streets of Thailand...
"Discovering Mee Sen on Mississippi Ave. was one of the best things I've done in Portland. I went to Thailand a few years ago and I have since been searching for something that reminds me of the amazing street food I had — obviously without the tropical environment. Mee Sen did the trick. As cheesy as this sounds, it was love at first bite. I always order the fish cakes with kafir lime leaves because it has such a fresh clean finish. Then there's the glass noodle dish with prawns and pork belly baked in a clay pot. Oh my god, it is so good. I also love the vibe up on Mississippi Avenue and then there's Ruby Jewel down the street...
