On Walking Out with Cathy Whims' Wishing Chickens

Welcome back to Shit People Steal, in which we ask chefs and restaurateurs what items in their restaurant have been (or are frequently) stolen.

In the latest edition of Shit People Steal, the good-natured Cathy Whims of Nostrana loves when guests choose to celebrate their birthdays at her rooster-bedecked Buckman restaurant — but that doesn't mean you're welcome to walk out with her handmade table decor:

"Surprisingly, the one thing that people most often steal at Nostrana are the chickens that I use for birthday candles. They're called wishing chickens. The chickens are all beeswax and handmade, and they're six inches high, so they're not easy to sneak out with... but people try to take them left and right, and when we inform guests that they can't actually keep them, they really don't want to give them up. They really love the chicken and get upset about having to give it up."

Add them to the birthday wish list for next year, perhaps.

Want to submit your theft stories? Send 'em over to pdx@eater.com. If you're the one that's done the thieving, we'll keep things anonymous, as per usual.
