Chef BJ Smith, the Original's former executive chef (who also spent time in kitchens at Papa Haydn, Olea, and Paley’s Place), is picking up the keys today for his brand new food venture — and those keys fit the door to a pretty sweet space. That's because Smith's Smokehouse 21 is about to take over the NW 21st space that, until recently, was home to Tanuki (which has now landed in Montavilla).
According to Smith, who has been working on this project ever since leaving the Original in April, Smokehouse 21 is geared to be primarily a take-out and delivery (including bike deliveries) joint focusing in on smokehouse fare including ribs, chicken, and sausage as well as plates of pickled stuff.
Smith expects to have SH21 open sometime in mid-to-late fall.
