Unexpected Expansions; Handsome Pizza's Holiday

PDX TO ASIA—A cross-Pacific expansion to report for two Portland restaurants: The Oregonian reports that SE's do-it-yourself pancake place Slappy Cakes will open an outpost in Tokyo, Japan in early 2013. Meanwhile, local chainlet Pho Van apparently opened a location in Beijing, China earlier this month. [OregonLive]

NORTH PORTLAND—The newly-christened Handsome Pizza (aka the cart formerly known as Pizza Depokos) has announced that it'll close for a winter hiatus. Will Fain's pizza spot will temporarily close after service on Sunday (December 16) and re-open on Tuesday, January 15. [EaterWire]

NEWBERG—Today in arbitrary listage, OpenTable dropped its list of the "Top 100 'Best Overall' restaurants" of the year, decided by diners. Newberg's the Painted Lady is the only Oregon restaurant that makes the cut. [EaterWire]
