[Avila, 4/30/12]
After a few finishing details since Eater's last visit (application of gold vinyl on the windows, stocking the shelves with more than 35 kinds of whiskey), Little Big Burger co-owners Micah Camden and Katie Poppe's Boxer Sushi is set to open to the public tonight (Tuesday, May 1), in the same SE Hawthorne building that houses the Blue Pig Cafe.
The opening-night menu can be downloaded right here (in .pdf form), but the shorthand version: Chef Ian Skomski, an alum of Camden's NE izakaya Yakuza, will offer more than 25 raw options available as nigiri, in addition to a selection of signature rolls and sashimi. (Scallop ceviche will be served with cherry tomato, citrus, orange oil; a seared hamachi gets treated with house ponzu, garlic, and Serrano chili; the namesake Boxer roll features tuna, yellowtail, salmon, amberjack, and tobiko, all in a spicy sauce.) And the "strictly sushi" promise has been kept, with just two non-sushi items (miso soup and Japanese seaweed salad available, both as starters.) Boxer Sushi's hours of operation (for now): 5:30-9:30pm, seven days a week.
