[Avila, 1/22/13]
Earlier this month, Broder alum Susie McWilliam swung the doors open at her casual neighborhood spot Redwood, taking over a SE Stark space that was recently home to Thai restaurant Bangkok Bites. The decor certainly matches the name (with redwood on walls and tabletops), and the Redwood menu, described as upscale seasonal comfort food, is divided into four sections — starters, salads, sandwiches, and "meals." Options include fried brussels sprouts and apple fritters (on the starters list), grilled veggie and pork shank sandwiches, and plated dishes from pot roast to stewed chicken to mussels frites. An 11-item cocktail list, meanwhile, serves up drinks like the "Redwood Original," a mix of Bulleit bourbon, vermouth, Angostura, orange, cherry, and lime; and the "Wooden Nickel," which combines vodka and Laphroaig as a "cheeky take on the classic martini."
Redwood is open now. Hours of operation: Sunday through Thursday, 4p.m. to midnight; Friday and Saturday, 4p.m. to 1a.m. Two daily happy hours run from 4-6p.m. and 10p.m.-close.
