Pickers

The New York Times files this great report about the freelance mushroom pickers who flock to Southern Oregon each year for matsutake mushroom season. The majority of pickers are Asian-Americans "drawn here by economic need or family tradition," and they still arrive to the small town of Chemult, Oregon despite the fact that prices for matsutake have plummeted since their mid-'90s heyday: "a long and lucky day in the woods, they said, might pay $100, often less."
