[Avila, 11/18/13]
And now, a quick look inside the Sudra, the all-vegan Indian spot that opened last week in NE's Ocean micro-restaurant complex. Sanjay Chandrasekaran, of longtime vegan food cart Sonny Bowl, has taken over the space formerly occupied by Korean chicken joint Basa Basa, and in lieu of bowls, offers Indian-inflected plates featuring veggies, chickpeas, and lentils with curries and chutneys. The opening menu offers plates like chickpea "cutlets" served with ginger-molasses veggies, tahini, red pepper chutney, pickles, and basmanti rice; a poori plate arrives with black-eyed pea korma, potato masala, and collard greens.
The Sudra also houses a full bar serving a half-dozen cocktails, two beers on tap, and a handful available by the bottle. Happy hour, from 4-7p.m., knocks $1 off all full-plate prices and includes a variety of $5 snacks. The Sudra is open now. Hours of operation: 11a.m. to 1--p.m., Sunday through Thursday; 11a.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday.
