[Avila, 11/8/13]
The much-anticipated second location of Peter Bro's beloved Scandinavian brunch spot Broder softly opened last week on North Interstate. Broder Nord takes over the former Gotham Tavern space, representing a big size upgrade from Broder's cozy SE Clinton location: the restaurant features more than 90 seats, a long bar, and space for an upcoming grab-and-go market and Scandinavian pantry. (According to Bro, the pantry will be stocked with jars of Broder's lemon curd, mustards, and jams, in addition to "signature pieces of our service" like wooden bords, and cast-iron pans.)
Gotham's signature aesthetic of chunky wooden pieces remains — including those VIP "pods" — but Broder's revamp brightens up the space. Light-and-airy wooden chairs replace Gotham's blocky dark banquettes; the bar and seating areas are lined with white subway tile; overhead industrial pipes are painted blue and orange.
Broder Nord's brunch menu is the same as the flagship, full of Swedish hash and seriously addictive aebelskiver, breakfast boards and burgers. Dinner, however, represents a departure: Bro says the plan is to offer "primarily seafood, focusing on the traditions and preparations of Swedish cuisine."
Broder Nord officially opens on Tuesday, the lucky date of 11/12/13. For now, it's softly open for breakfast and lunch, from 9a.m. to 3p.m.
