After six years of serving line-inducing Southern fare at E. Burnside's cultishly beloved Screen Door, chef Rick Widmayer has left the restaurant. Eat Beat's Ben Tepler breaks the news that Wedmayer will team with Greg Slauson (of the food cart Donut-O-Rama) to open a hybrid doughnut shop/bar serving Widmayer's take on comfort food. Per PoMo:
"The plan is to have a donut window for take-away in front, with a full bar serving 'refined blue collar' comfort food in back. Expect to find a small, meat n' potatoes menu with house-made sausages, smoked meats, and a signature burger, along with Southern, Screen Door influences."
Widmayer's been out of the Screen Door kitchen for the past month; a location for the new project has not been set. Tentative opening date: May 2013.
