Inside Township and Range, Now Open on Hawthorne

[Avila, 3/7/13]

SE Hawthorne has a new neighborhood restaurant in the form of Township and Range, a project from Laurelhurst Theater co-owners Prescott Allen and Woody Wheeler. As promised, the spot — whose name references the owners' background in geography — offers the duo's "vision of a neighborhood restaurant," complete with a kid-friendly menu. The interior reclaims wood from a previous tentant, a photo lab, and a commissioned art piece provides a colorful look at the Ladd's Addition neighborhood.

Meanwhile, the Township and Range menu leans toward comforting plates. In addition to burgers and sandwiches (like a corned beef Reuben and roast pork with broccoli rabe), the menu features appetizers like chicken live pate and salt cod fritters; entrees include buttermilk fried chicken, seared steelhead with hazelnut butter, and beer-braised pork shank. A 10-item menu of "sides" goes pure comfort with mashed potatoes and gravy, mac 'n' cheese, and creamy polenta. For drinks, a cocktail menu features 13 options — like the "Repose," with Bulleit rye, muddled cherries, and lemon, and the "Prudential," with gin, ginger syrup, lemon, lime, and Prosecco. The spot offers 14 beers on tap, and growler fills are available to-go.

Township and Range is open now. Hours of operation: 4-10p.m, Monday through Thursday, Sunday; 4-11p.m., Friday and Saturday.
