Monday, Oct. 13 at 7:30, a Los Angeles couple is coming to Powell's to sign copies of their new vegan cookbook. Just business as usual right?
Well, this couple recently canceled their San Francisco signings because of protest threats. That's right, protest threats over a vegan cookbook.
It turns out Matt Holloway and Michelle Davis, the previously incognito authors of the popular, expletive-rich blog "Thug Kitchen: Eat Like You Give A F*CK," have stirred up controversy for turning out to be, well, white.
Some critics say this is a problem of cultural appropriation, that authors Matt Holloway and Michelle Davis, who started their blog in 2012, are akin to writers in blackface. Others say it's racist to assume the authors would be black.
What say you? Were Holloway and Davis perpetuating stereotypes or busting them up? Were they infringing on a culture they don't belong to or simply being creative?
