Grand Central Bakery opened its newest location this morning, bringing its breads, pastries, and seasonal soups and sandwiches to the area just east of Reed College.
The cozy spot, detailed with sustainable wood, exposed brick and white subway tiles, would have been the eighth Portland location for the family-owned chain if the NE Weidler outpost hadn't recently shuttered due to high rents.
The new GCB is in good company -- just steps from the new Portland Fish Market and a still-under-construction New Seasons set to open late next summer.
If you need an excuse to check out the new space, the Portland cafe menus recently transitioned from summer to fall, adding a new chili beef torta, a tempeh banh mi, brioche cinnamon rolls, banana buckwheat muffins and Latte Dunkers: crispy, sweet strips of flaky croissant dough, "kind of like a Grand Central churro."
And here's a pro tip: If you don't follow the bakery on Twitter, you should. They're always giving away free stuff.
