Hot Lips is Going to Hollywood

The sustainably minded pizza chain is moving into the old Pal's Shanty space.

Northeast Portland is poised to become pizza central. Hot Lips announced today that it will open its sixth restaurant in the Hollywood neighborhood, joining Atomic Pizza, Hogan's Goat and Blind Onion. This is in addition to two new wood-fired pizza restaurants moving in nearby -- soon-to-open Otto's Pizzeria in the Roseway neighborhood, and still-under-construction Fire & Stone in Beaumont. And let's not forget Lucca in neighboring Alameda.

The new Hot Lips will take over the former Pal's Shanty space (4630 N.E. Sandy Blvd., Portland), which closed in November 2013 after an employee allegedly burgled the restaurant and started a fire. The seafood shack was a Portland icon, but Jim Hanson, former owner, appears ready to let it go. In the press release he says:

"I couldn't be happier that another family-owned, established Portland restaurant is continuing the tradition," said Hanson. "It is really important to me to be able to turn the keys over to people who care about quality and the community."

Hotlips owner David Yudkin and his wife and co-owner, Jeana Edelman, are working with Hanson to find ways to preserve some of Pal's Shanty's heritage, which dates back to 1937.

The menu will include the usual lineup of seasonal pizzas, sandwiches, and calzones, plus craft beer on tap, bottled wine and Hot Lips' line of sodas. The new location will offer delivery, and you can expect it to open by the end of the year.
