PBJ's Grilled on Northwest 23rd Closes to Focus on Bigger Plans

The sandwich cart shutters as owners gear up to launch a brick-and-mortar.

Known as the purveyor of creative riffs on the traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich, PBJ's Grilled food cart on Northwest 23rd closed for good on Sunday.

The cart operated in a spot next to Pop Up Shop for more than four years, and in July 2013 expanded to a second cart in Hawthorne's Cartopia cart pod. But owners Keena Tallman and Shane Chapman have brick-and-mortar dreams, so they've closed the original cart in order to focus on launching a sandwich shop next spring.

According to their Facebook post: "After much thought and consideration, we have decided to put all of our efforts into opening our first sandwich shop. We plan to do this in May of 2015. Location has not been decided."

The Cartopia location has an expanded sandwich menu that will serve as a testing ground for the sandwich shop. Expect more meats, as well as housemade ingredients like jam and nut butters.
