The long-awaited, much anticipated subterranean bar Pepe Le Moko officially, actually opened on Valentine's Day in the Ace Hotel, and here's a look at Nate Tilden and Jeffrey Morgenthaler's respective food and drink menus. The brief food menu highlights snacks, raw oysters, and a half-dozen Mediterranean-inspired bocadillos: sardines and pickled fennel, chorizo rioja and Mahon cheese, and a sweetheart ham and zucchini pickles (the former by Tilden's Olympic Provisions, naturally). But for the underground speakeasy, Morgenthaler's cocktail list offers a few surprises:
In place of Morgenthaler's acclaimed barrel-aged cocktails, which the bartender pioneered upstairs at Clyde Common, Pepe plays with drinks normally eschewed by craft bartenders: boozy Long Island iced teas, flavored martinis, and sweet Amaretto Sours (whose recipe Morgenthaler is immensely proud of, blogging back in 2012 that "I make the best Amaretto Sour you've ever had in your life.") Check the menu:
Bakersfield Picon Punch Royale
Torani Amer, lemon, Oregon brandy, grenadine, sparkling wine
Long Island Iced Tea
Vodka, gin, rum, Cointreau, lemon, Coca-Cola
Hotel Nacional Special
Aged rum, lime, apricot brandy, pineapple gomme, bitters
Amaretto Sour
Amaretto, overproof bourbon, lemon, egg white*
Grasshopper
Crèmes de menthe et cacao, vanilla ice cream, Fernet Branca, sea salt
Espresso Martini
Stumptown coffee extract, Kahlua, overproof vodka, lemon oil
