This morning, during a live "ceremony" in Orlando, Florida, the James Beard Foundation dropped its list of semifinalists for the 2014 Restaurant and Chef awards. This represents the "long" list from which the official lineup of nominees will be culled — finalists will be announced on March 18. Sadly, after Gabriel Rucker's 2013 win for Rising Star Chef, Portland has no candidates in that category for 2014; but there are many Portland chefs and restaurants still in the running.
Those who can still find themselves shortlisted as possible Beard nominees:
· Outstanding Bar Program: Clyde Common
· Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional: Stephen McCarthy (Clear Creek Distillery)
· Best Chef: Northwest: Greg Denton & Gabrielle Quiñónez Denton (Ox), Trent Pierce (Roe), Naomi Pomeroy (Beast), Adam Sappington (The Country Cat), Cathy Whims (Nostrana), Justin Woodward (Castagna)
After the finalists are revealed in mid-March, winners be announced at the James Beard Foundation Awards on May 5.
