Celebrating Paczki Day; Farmer-Chef Connection 2014

HAWTHORNE— The Tuesday before Lent — known to heathens as "Fat Tuesday," or Mardi Gras day — is also known in Polish households as the day to make paczki, traditional pastries of jelly-filled, deep-fried dough. SE's Polish restaurant Bar Dobre is currently taking pre-orders for pick-up on Tuesday, March 4: Two kinds will be available, filled with plum jam or bavarian cream, and are $25 per dozen. More information here. [EaterWire]

OLD TOWN— Also frying up paczki for Fat Tuesday: Bowery Bagels is accepting pre-orders for four varieties (apple, chocolate cream, prune, and vanilla cream), available for $2 each. Bowery will take orders through 6p.m. on Monday, and pick-up is also scheduled for March 4. [EaterWire]

SOUTHWEST— The 14th-annual installment of Portland's Farmer-Chef Connection, a day-long event designed to create a local food community, is set for the World Forestry Center this Monday, March 3. Acclaimed North Carolina chef Andrea Reusing (of Chapel Hill's Lantern) is this year's keynote speaker, and the program will also feature brief TED-style talks by local chefs/restaurateurs Dayna McErlean (DOC, Nonna) and Biwa duo Gabe Rosen and Kina Voelz. Tickets are $39, inclusive of breakfast, lunch, and happy hour, and are available here. [EaterWire]
