Bend-based butcher shop Pono Farm & Fine Meats — which operates a stand at the Portland Farmers Market — will soon open a Portland outpost, but it'll be different from its Southern Oregon deli counter. Eat Beat reports Pono Farm owners Shin and Ted Nakato will open Pono Farm Soul Kitchen on NE Sandy Boulevard, serving a menu inspired by their "Japanese-American childhood." Per PoMo's Ben Tepler, that translates into dishes like tonkatsu, black truffle congee, and fried rice made with the butcher case's house bacon.
The 75-seat restaurant will also house a retail shop and meat market, where guests can grab sandwiches to-go (for comparison's sake, Pono's Bend deli offers sandwiches like a crispy fried pork with chipotle aioli and a Wagyu cheesesteak). Pono Farm Soul Kitchen is planning a May opening; more as it becomes available.
