Tour the North Light, Now Open on N. Mississippi

[Acurso, 4/24/14]

Here now, a quick spin through the North Light, a comfort-food restaurant that takes over N. Mississippi's former Cup & Saucer space (which also very briefly hosted the Biloxi Deli Lounge). Co-owners Christopher Gutierrez and Hope Beraka, who also own SE Clinton's late-night favorite Night Light Lounge, brighten things up a bit with light-wood tables, clean white walls, and hanging lamps at the bar that are simultaneously sleek and retro.

While the Night Light serves up solid bar fare like nachos, burgers, and mac and cheese, the North Light's menu has a more ambitious edge. Come dinnertime, chef Lyle Jost's appetizers range from tuna ceviche to grilled asparagus with miner's lettuce; while a five-item salad section includes a Brussels sprouts offering with grapes, green beans, and pear. Entrees borrow from "New American" influences: herb-roasted spaghetti squash with hazelnuts; seared steelhead with crawfish and tarragon; NY strip steak served with Yorkshire pudding (and yes, there's a burger, too). The North Light also serves weekend brunch, and seats at the bar/lounge or the large outdoor patio also offer a bar snacks menu with grilled cheese, garlicky chicken lollipops, and potato puffs. Former Wildwood pastry chef Julianne Richardson handles the bread and pastry program.

The North Light is open now. Hours of operation: 4p.m. to close, daily; Saturday and Sunday brunch, 9a.m. to 2p.m.
