1) Woodlawn: Scoop shop Bassotto Gelateria is now open in the space next door to NE Dekum's newish Tamale Boy, completing an essential summer combo: tamales on the latter's back patio, finished off with gelato for dessert. Bassotto owner Don Hill offers morning pastries, full espresso service, and gelato and sorbetto in a dozen daily flavors like hazelnut, frutti di bosco variegato (mixed berries), and lemon (on its Facebook page, Hill jokes that ice cream is "the true breakfast of champions"). Hours of operation: 8a.m. to 9p.m., Tuesday through Friday; 10a.m. to 10p.m., Saturday; 10a.m. to 8p.m., Sunday. [EaterWire]
2: Hawthorne: Last week, the former Township & Range space on SE Hawthorne officially marked the debut of the Hawthorne Lobster House, which (obviously) highlights the crustacean and other seafood on its sprawling menu. Among the dishes on offer: Appetizers include a lobster cocktail (featuring two chilled lobster tails), breaded and deep-fried "hot lobster bites" served with wasabi sauce, and lobster fondue. Chilled and hot seafood towers are offered in two sizes (regular, $75 and large, $125), while entrees include lobster rolls, a lobster Pescatore for two, and steaks. More information here. Hours of operation: 4:30p.m. to 10p.m., daily. [EaterWire]
