W. Burnside Dive Bar the Matador Calling It Quits

The Matador, the festive dive that's held court on W. Burnside since 1971, will permanently close its doors this Friday, September 12. As WWeek first pointed out, owner Casey Maxwell — who's owned the bar since 2006 — confirmed the shutter on Facebook yesterday:

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce that this Friday September 12th will be the last night of business for The Matador. Thank you all for the years of good times and laughs. Come down for one last call and say goodbye."

The Matador — not to be confused with the Seattle-based Casa del Matador chainlet — represents yet-another closure of an "old Portland" institution: Last week, the Central Eastside stalwart Produce Row unexpectedly shuttered after 40 years in business. Maxwell's eastside bar, the Conquistador, remains open.
