Inside First National Taphouse, Now Pouring Near PSU

[Avila, 9/12/14]

The Eugene-based First National Taphouse opened last week near Portland State University, classing up an area mostly known for its assortment of bagel shops, pizza joints, and food carts. With a 30-strong tap list and a bottle shop stocked with 400 options from around the world, it's poised to draw a steady flow of beer lovers from the neighboring campus and downtown office crowd. But it's also just blocks from the Keller Auditorium and outfitted with dark wood and clubby seating, making it another pre- or post-performance dining option for the theater crowd.

A gastropub with an Irish accent, its menu is stocked with inventive takes on Emerald Isle classics. Colcannon (mashed potatoes and cabbage) gets reimagined into twice-baked potato skins filled with mascarpone, kale, and bacon jam. Fish and chips come with pineapple slaw. During weekend brunch, boxty (potato pancakes) gets topped with wild mushrooms, poached eggs, and hollandaise.

First National Taphouse is open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, with a limited lounge menu offered between lunch and dinner. Check the website for details.
