Beaverton-based, small-batch coffee roaster Dapper & Wise quietly opened the doors to its first Portland cafe on March 7, on a busy corner of SE Division's restaurant row. Owned by Evan Aldrete and his business partner Tyler Geel, who also own the Insomnia Coffee Co., chainlet in Beaverton, Hillsdale and Cannon Beach, the light-filled space is stocked with well-thought-out details including obscenely comfortable leather chairs; tables crafted by Aldrete's father-in-law out of local Pacific Northwest madrona, cherry, and myrtle wood; quirky light fixtures from Schoolhouse Electric; luxe wallpaper from Rifle Paper Co.; and bamboo flooring set like giant diamonds. Coffee geeks will notice three black Mahlkonig K30 grinders and a custom seedling green La Marzocco Linea PB espresso machine.
The cafe's menu showcases Aldrete and Geel's creativity, from the coffee soda made with raw Oregon honey and spearmint, to the house-made Bartlett pear and ginger chai that's served hot and steaming in a mug, or cold in a Collins glass with a head like a gin fizz. Their single-origin espresso and drip coffees, roasted in the Beaverton facility, show care and seasonality in sourcing, and mochas are made with Woodblock Chocolate.
