The original Bollywood Theater on NE Alberta earned a strong following right from the start, but the space proved too small to meet the hungry demand of its many devotees. So when the Bin 21 wine bar next door shuttered just before the new year, chef Troy MacLarty jumped at the chance to take over the space and expand his kitchen and dining room.
He closed in April to renovate, completing much of the demo and construction work himself along with his cooks. And May 6, the new and improved original location of Bollywood Theater opened its doors with double the square footage.
The new addition flows seamlessly from the original space, adding not just more room but also more natural light thanks to roll-up glass doors. The decor similarly steeped in vintage Indian ephemera, and even features a mural on the wall painted by MacLarty himself.
