Since the beginning, Voodoo Doughnut has celebrated life and death. "Some of our locations feature obituaries, whether they are collaged in frames or made into tabletops," says Sara Heise, "Executive Wrangler" of Voodoo Doughnut. With many music, film, and sports icons passing away, Voodoo Doughnuts has been busy making what it calls tribute doughnuts, beautifully decorated doughnuts featuring the likes of David Bowie, Motorhead's Lemmy, Alan Rickman, Natalie Cole, and other stars.
Heise says a variety of artists create the tribute doughnuts using "top secret" decorating techniques. "When we find out about the news, it's up to the best decorator on that shift to work on it," Heise says. Most doughnuts are made nine inches by nine inches, and here are some of the creations from the past year. If you want to order a tribute doughnut, Voodoo needs at least 24 hours notice (and you can skip the line if your order is over $40 and you pay with PayPal with 48 hours notice).
