The Pearl's gourmet grocery World Foods and Washington's awarded Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. have teamed up to open Pilcrow, a 13-seat coffee, wine, and beer bar located inside World Foods at 830 NW Everett St. World Foods owns and operates the bar, and Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. has trained Pilcrow's baristas and will play a continued educational roll. The grand opening is this Saturday, January 23, from 3 to 7 p.m.
"We have eight seats at the bar, and five stools designed for laptop-camping, which look out our giant vintage windows," says World Foods' Elise Stewart. World Foods also has some in-store seating for those grabbing something to eat from the deli, and Stewart says you'll be able to find pastries, coffee and tea drinks made with organic milk and milk alternatives, and for sweetening, turbinado sugar and Bee Local raw honey. As for beer and cider on tap and wine, those come handpicked by the grocery's wine steward, Jack Simmons, and will focus mostly on Oregon producers.
Pilcrow is the first place in Oregon where you'll be able to find Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. coffee served day in and day out, and the roaster, which uses "caramelization roasting" to concentrate coffee's natural sweetness, was named 2013 Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine.
At Saturday's opening, you'll find samples of wines and coffee and hors d'oeuvres by chef and World Foods owner Mirna Attar, who also owns Ya Hala Restaurant. After Saturday, Pilcrow will operate from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
