Bombay Cricket Club may have left SE Hawthorne after 21 years, but a new vegetarian Indian restaurant has just opened in its old venue to supply the neighborhood with its curries, samosas, and fried paneer pakora. Maruti threw open the doors on Saturday, November 12, and it is owned by England-born Rudra Parmar, who manages the restaurant, and India-born chef Falguni Khanna. Maruti operated for two years in Mt. Shasta before making the move.

“Our inspiration comes from timeless family recipes that we have updated with the healthiest ingredients we can source,” Khanna tells Eater. Khanna says cooking with love is what “makes everything taste so good.”

Parmar and Khanna say they moved to Portland after receiving such a positive response from their Mt. Shasta customers. From 220 or so Yelpers, Maruti received 4.5 stars, and Via Magazine also recommended the restaurant in a recent issue. “This lively city with its foodie culture is exactly where we belong,” says Khanna. “We are excited to open our restaurant here and meet and nourish our new friends.”

Maruti is located at 1925 SE Hawthorne Blvd. It is open from 5 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday, and Monday, and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
