Named after the founder of St. Johns, the James John Cafe has served egg Benedicts, biscuits and gravy, and other all-American brunch plates since December 2006, and now, owner Suzanne Bozarth tells Eater she will close her cafe by Christmas. “Our landlord terminated our lease,” says Bozarth. “It was supposed to be up in November 2017, but they didn’t give us any options.” Before opening the James John Cafe, Bozarth was the bar manager at Paley’s Place.
Bozarth has had a challenging year. She underwent surgery for breast cancer, and the community rallied around her, holding a fundraiser. Now she says new complications mean facing another surgery. Discovering she had to close her cafe has made her holiday season even more overwhelming, and right now, Bozarth says she’s just focusing on the logistics of moving out.
To support the James John Cafe, swing by for brunch Wednesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., between now and Christmas Eve. “It is my hopes and dreams to open another place,” says Bozarth. According to the cafe owner, sending “good vibes” wouldn’t hurt, either.
