Sommelier and winemaker Dana Frank and partner Jane Smith (The Knock Back) have taken over the lease at 2930 NE Killingsworth, former home to the Cocotte French restaurant, which closed last November. According to PoMo, it will be a restaurant named Dame, and it will serve natural wines and a menu designed with help from food consultant, Sam Smith (La Mama, Ava Gene's, Zahav). Expect vegetable-forward dishes with Mediterranean and Eastern European accents.
Frank was the former sommelier at SE Division's upscale Italian hotspot, Ava Gene's, and she and her husband own Bow & Arrow, the local urban winery that makes natural wines in the style of France's Loire Valley. She tells Portland Monthly that natural wines are a growing market, and Dame will serve both budget-friendly and high-end natural wines.
The 37-seat restaurant aims to open early summer with a private dining room to boot.
