NORTH PORTLAND—Jan-Marc Wine Cellars, an urban winery owned by Jan-Marc and Barbara Baker, two classically trained chefs with 25 years experience in Portland and San Francisco kitchens, has opened its long-awaited wine pub, Garagiste, at 1225 N Killingsworth. Garagiste will serve "wine/food/beer/cake—and some good whiskey," according to the website. Expect well-priced wine bottle refills and glasses of Jan-Marc Wine Cellars' wines, from chardonnay and riesling, to pinot noir and zinfandel, and dishes like duck and porcini soup and chevre souffle with beet and radish salad. Garagiste is open Fridays, from 5 p.m. to closing, and Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to closing. [EaterWire]
HAWTHORNE—The Oregonian reports The Toffee Club opened this week at 1006 SE Hawthorne Blvd., and guess what—it could be the soccer-focused bar of your dreams. It has 100 seats, an old-school interior defined by raw wood tones, steak and ale pies, and plenty of "football" memorabilia from the owners' (Niki Diamond, Jack Hoppins, Pete Hoppins) private collections. The venue was once home to the Hawthorne Strip strip club, too. [Oregonian]
HAWTHORNE—Opened April 4 at SE Hawthorne and 35th, Toadstool Cupcakes is a small, family-owned bakery serving a unique form of cupcake that combines "French cream truffle with an English fairy cake"—and the cupcakes come in mini and jumbo sizes and 50 flavors daily. The bakery recently relocated from Eugene, where it shuttered two locations. Check out this potentially tasty cupcake invention daily, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. [EaterWire]
