PORTLAND—The cricket-flour revolution is on, people. Based in Portland, Poda Foods won the inaugural Pitchfest, a new event affiliated with TechfestNW and presented by WWeek. The Portland-based company won a prize worth $120,000 for its protein powder products made from crickets. Compared with beef, crickets need 20 times less water and release 5 times less methane, and they are both high in protein and have more calcium than milk, have more iron than spinach, and contain all 9 essential amino acids. Poda Foods will likely use the award to supply protein bar producers with protein. Watch the winning video pitch. [WWeek]
SE DIVISION—Fans of Mark Doxtader's Portland-style bagels are in luck: The bagels have been hard to find since Doxtader launched his wood-fired Tastebud pizzeria, and tomorrow, April 30, he's holding his Bagel Pop-up on the north side of SE Division, between 12th and 13th avenues, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Find fresh, boiled, wood-fired, and brick-oven baked bagels, both to eat onsite and to take home. NORTH WILLIAMS—The fourth Coco Donuts location opened on Tuesday at 33 N Skidmore, at the corner of North Williams Avenue, and it delivers its unique combo of coffees roasted in-house and handcrafted doughnuts (expect the familiar: glazed, jelly, chocolate-frosted, etc.). The hours are Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. [EaterWire]
