Turning on the burners today, Friday the 13th, at 1440 NE Broadway St., Capitol Bar is shaping up to give NE Broadway the nightlife it deserves: A jaw-dropping space, no-nonsense drinks, some karaoke on the side, and a honed menu designed by Carina Rumrill and Nick Dickison, the chefs behind one of Portland’s most popular pop-ups, Of Roots and Blooms.
“It’s the first time that we’ve partnered up with another restaurant,” says Lightning Bar Collective co-owner John Janulis. “Even before the project, I would always eat at Of Roots and Blooms every Sunday at Culmination Brewing.”
See the full opening-day food and drink menus below. That macaroni and cheese with a cult following is on there, and bar snacks include things like beer cheese soup and garlic bread with smoked-tomato ranch. The offerings are all currently vegetarian. Janulis says lunch is in store down the road.
“Of Roots and Blooms has such a big following it’d be kind of stupid not to open for lunch,” he says.
But didn’t Rumrill and Dickison move to Vermont? Yes, after designing Capitol Bar’s menu, they indeed took off. Dickison’s son Alex Knowlton will rule the Capitol Bar kitchen.
The cocktails mostly keep prices in check, hovering around the $10 mark. There’s also around nine wines by the glass and a handful of draft beer options, including $3 Rainiers.
Capitol Bar operates from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week at 1440 NE Broadway. Here are the menus:
