The owner of Ashland’s popular Sammich sandwich shop and Portland-based Pastrami Zombie food cart, Melissa McMillan, is opening not one but two Sammich sandwich shops in Portland. McMillan tells Eater she signed a lease this week at 2137 E Burnside St., with plans to start loading hoagies with Italian beef by December 1.

McMillan says her previously announced project with Scout Beer at SE 50th and Division has faced delays — it is still happening, contrary to other reports — but when the lease on East Burnside became available, she jumped on it.

Sammich East Burnside is “going to feel like a deli you walk into in Chicago,” she says. “It’s going to be loud, fun, kid-friendly, with lots of memorabilia on the walls.”

McMillan is also teaming up with her little brother, Timmy McMillan, for the project.

“He helped me at the very beginning to open Sammich,” she says. “We’re going to put our brains together to see how we can make Sammich better.”

The 900-square-foot East Burnside venue seats 28 and will bring more of Sammich’s greatest hits to Portland — sandwiches and salads beyond the already incredible pastrami and burger at Pastrami Zombie — for lunch and dinner. The item to be on the lookout for: the Italian beef, one of the most popular options in Ashland but one too unwieldy for the food cart.

Find updates on the two forthcoming Sammich locations here. Pastrami Zombie will continue serving subs inside the Mississippi Marketplace food cart pod.
