The popular homegrown Mexican restaurant and food cart Los Gorditos is now stuffing meaty and plant-based burritos at 2393 SE 50th Avenue (at Southeast Division), owner Alicia Cruz tells Eater. Offering counter service and seating for around 50, the sixth Los Gorditos is a complete restaurant and will throw its grand opening celebration on Friday, October 6.
“50th and Division is where we opened our first food cart 11 years ago,” says Cruz, “and with all of the development in PDX, we’re really happy to stay in the same location.”
The original Los Gorditos food cart was displaced in the same spot in 2015 when its lot was slated for development, but, in a remarkable turn of events, the new Los Gorditos has set up shop in the ground floor of that very development.
Cruz says the new spot will serve the usual lineup of burritos and tacos, with options for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. She’s also working on a new menu to debut salads and, if all goes to plan, alcoholic beverages.
But will it bring back its deep fried burritos?
“Maybe,” says Cruz. “We need both a vegan- and meat-dedicated deep fryer in every location, so we’re working on the details.”
Currently, Los Gorditos dedicates its fryers to plant-based dishes. Cruz verifies any vegetarian or vegan burrito on the menu can be deep fried for $2 — an epic hangover cure — at every Los Gorditos location, except its food truck at Southeast Powell Boulevard and 50th.
Los Gorditos is now open at 2393 SE 50th Ave. It operates Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays, from 9 a.m to 7 p.m.
