This week, the Daily Meal released its annual list of 101 top pizzerias in the nation, and two Portland pizza spots made the ranking, Ken’s Artisan Pizza and Apizza Scholls. The two venerable pizzerias came in at numbers 58 and 18, respectively, considerable positioning given the Daily Meal considered around 900 pizzerias and featured mostly East Coast selections.

To compile its list, the Daily Meal says it “obsessively cast as wide a net as possible across the country” and utilized recommendations from friends, reader tips, and experts. In the end, roughly 900 pizzerias were in the running. It also defined the perfect pizza as having the following qualities:

”a nuanced sauce, neither too sweet nor salty (assuming that it has sauce); good-quality, well-distributed cheese (assuming that it has cheese); good-quality and sensibly combined toppings; a flavorful, savory crust; and, perhaps most important aside from the overall quality of the ingredients, a judicious, well-balanced, and pleasing ratio of sauce, cheese, toppings, and crust that maintains a structural integrity no matter the style.”

Apizza Scholls is a long-time member of the Eater 38, which also features Ken Forkish’s Northwest bakery, which is sister-business to Ken’s Artisan Pizza. Both pizza hotspots on are the Eater map to essential Portland pizza, too.
