The rumors were true

After choosing Portland for its first expansion outside of Japan, the Tokyo-based ramen franchise Afuri fired up the stock pots in Southeast last fall. Now, just months later, it’s ready to expand: U.S. CEO Taichi Ishizuki tells Eater a second Afuri will open its doors in Portland by summer 2017.

But details are still rolling in. Eater reached out to Afuri after the Merc dropped this tantalizing rumormongering tip last week (hidden inside an article reporting the closure of Ash Street Saloon):

An online brochure for 225 SW Ash touts that the bar/venue is located next door to what will be the second Portland location of acclaimed Japanese ramen spot Afuri Ramen. Info seems to indicate that the Sky Club/Captain Ankeny’s Well space will become home to the Afuri’s newest location.

The old Captain Ankeny’s Well used to operate at 50 SW 3rd Ave., and Ishizuki did not comment specifically on whether or not Afuri 2.0 will take up residence at that address. Eater has followed up for the full story and will publish an update as news roll in.
