Jenn Louis — one of Portland’s most nationally recognized chefs — sold her follow-up restaurant, Sunshine Tavern, last fall, and many wondered how the sale would affect the family-friendly SE Division bar and grill. On April 20, the new team unveiled its plans on Facebook: Sunshine Tavern would closed at the end of the week and reopen rebrand as the Black Dog Lounge.
Located at 3111 SE Division, Black Dog Lounge started pouring craft beer, cocktails, well-priced well drinks, and the “cheapest PBR on the block” ($2 tallboys) on April 27. The vibe hasn’t changed much, but the menu has been overhauled. It’s still a crowd-pleaser, replete with familiar options for kids, but there are more comfort food and vegan and vegetarian dishes.
Think fried pickles and ranch; carnitas and white bean nachos; steak and onion rings; tempeh, chorizo, and potato hash with polenta; and both meaty and tempeh takes on the Reuben. Gluten-free buns and other diet-conscious options are also available. Here’s a look at the full menu:
Black Dog Lounge is now open Monday through Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday, from 4 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, from 2 p.m. to midnight; and Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Happy hour runs all day on Mondays and Tuesdays and every other day of the week, from 4 to 6 p.m.
