The swank 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards’ ceremony and gala — sometimes referred to as “the Oscars of the food world” — is still going live at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, and the award for Best Chef Northwest has just been announced: The 2017 winners are Portland’s Greg Denton and Gabrielle Quiñónez Denton, the powerhouse couple behind Ox and Superbite.

Since opening Ox in 2012, the two chefs — partners in both business and love — have dominated grilling in the City of Roses, armed with a specially channeled grill that does wonders to everything from rib-eyes to foraged mushrooms.

As Denton and Quiñónez Denton told Eater PDX last week, the past year had already been a big one. Not only did they open their second restaurant, Superbite, but they published a cookbook and embarked on a cross-country book tour. Winning the biggest award for chefs in the Pacific Northwest is an incredible way to cap it off. A hearty congratulations to Greg Denton and Gabrielle Quiñónez Denton, recipients of the 2017 James Beard Award for Best Chef Northwest.
