After heroically visiting “30 cities and eating 330 burgers,” Thrillist’s National Burger Critic Kevin Alexander has found his favorite burger in all of America: Nick’s Cheeseburger, with grilled onions, from Portland’s own Stanich’s, located at 4915 NE Fremont St.
The griddled bun prevented “the somewhat messy burger from leaking through and getting soggy”; the grilled onions, which "must sit marinating in something," melded perfectly with the American cheese over the crisp-edged patty; and the mayo-mustard-red-relish combo resulted in "a mixture of sweet and salty flavors I haven't experienced anywhere else."
In total, Thrillist’s “Best Burgers in America” list includes 100 juicy creations, and Little Bird Bistro’s double cheeseburger also got a spot, at number 43. It’s the only other Portland option, and Alexander recommends improving upon Chef Gabriel Rucker’s brie-splosion (brie usually crowns those double patties) by subbing American cheese.
Stanich’s is one of Portland’s requisite restaurants — with a legit old-school-Portland scene — and it has been going strong since 1949. Think you know a better burger in America? Sound off now in the comments, or forever hold your tongue to Stanich’s meat.
