Underground bagel company Bernstein’s Bagels is making a lot of people in St. Johns very happy: Its brick and mortar at 8408 N Lombard opened May 19 to serve old-school, no-b.s. bagels by owners Noah Bernstein and Peter Hurteau. And the best news: Bernstein’s bagels are hand-rolled and boiled twice a day: once at 7:30 a.m., and the again at 10 a.m. Get your timing right for a still-hot-from-the-oven bagel.

Bernstein’s Bagels have only popped up at the farmers market and through partnerships with local cafes for the past couple years, and they’ve steadily gained a reputation for quality bagels. Bernstein, who also plays saxophone, oversees the bagel-making process.

On offer are a selection of daily bagel flavors, with options to doll them up with schmears, eggs, lox, and prosciutto, as well as coffee by Nossa Familia and teas by Steven Smith. The new Bernstein’s Bagels operates Tuesday through Sunday, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — or until the bagels run out (which has been a common occurrence over the past week).
