Crisp on the outside, custardy on the inside, egg waffles, or bubble waffles, are a popular street snack in Hong Kong, and the new Puffle Waffle PDX food cart is currently serving them in both sweet and savory versions at Happy Vally Station. Puffle Waffle plugged in its waffle irons on April 17 to serve the rare-to-Portland street food, and it’s likely the only place in the city you’ll find them this summer.
Egg waffles are waffles made with an especially eggy batter and cooked on a waffle iron with a bubble pattern, making them look more-or-less like Bubble Wrap, with a freshly baked aroma. They come out light and pliable and are then rolled into a cone and filled with ice cream and toppings.
Puffle Waffle only offers four flavors of ice cream at the moment, or you can get crazy instead choose from three spreads, Nutella, honey, or whipped cream. Things get more interesting with the numerous toppings, from pineapple and rainbow sprinkles, to Matcha Pocky sticks. The final step is selecting a sauce, whether chocolate, blackberry, or condensed milk, and the resulting sweet waffle costs $7.

Puffle Waffle also serves Italian sodas, milkshakes, and three savory waffle sandwiches, including a cheese waffle and another stuffed with turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Puffle Waffle is now open Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It celebrates its grand opening party on May 20 and 21.
